The Astrophysicist Jacques P. Vallée's scientific research, over the last 30 years,
has involved observations and analysis of
magnetic fields in and around astronomical objects.
His specialty is magnetic astronomy - the study of how magnetic forces act as 'midwife' in the delivery
of a protostar, twist and wind through the interstellar medium, influence how clusters of galaxies form and
may even shape the Universe itself.
* Jacques received his PhD in Astronomy from the Univ. of Toronto,
following a MSc Physics, a BSc Physics, and a BA Arts at the Univ. de Montréal. He is currently Senior Research Council Officer at NRC Canada.
--> Tables of 140+ professional articles,
72+ presentations to peers,
14 scientific reviews, and
3 covers of scientific journals.
* He discovered
"escaping cloudlets" in the collision of 2 interstellar clouds (1995),
the B ~ n**1 relation for magnetic field B and gas density n in a supershell
around a young stellar association - now called Vallée's Law (1993),
the magnetic field in the Perseus spiral arm (1983),
the B ~ n**0.2 relation for magnetic field B and gas density n on galactic
scale (1990), the B~[SFR]**0.1 relation for magnetic field B and star formation rate SFR on galactic scale (1994), and the magnetic field and rotation measure in the local supercluster of galaxies (1990).
With co-workers, he was the first to discover the magnetic field in the Scutum spiral arm (1988),
the magnetic field in the gas in a cluster of galaxies (1986), and the largest head-tail radio galaxy (1988),
and others.

In addition to his research schedule, Dr. Vallée fulfills several different functions for various
organizations (public relations, communications).
* In Public Relations, he is HIA's Information Agent for the Media and coordinates the
Institute's outreach efforts, serving the media and presenting materials for the public.
--> Tables of 130+ media interviews,
210+ public papers,
14 oral presentations to the public,
8 web productions for the public
.
* In Communications, he serves as
HIA Correspondent for NRC Ottawa (Zone, CS Communic, CS Public Awareness Team),
serving as HIA Technical Secretary for university TACs (optical Gemini & CFHT, radio JCMT)
and university CNC (URSI), HIA link to astronomy professionals (CASCA, Cassiopeia).
