Careers in Astronomy in Canada
Prospects for work in Canada
- It is challenging to find a secure, long-term job nowadays in any career. Perhaps only 3 or so permanent positions open up in Canada each year.
Mostly in Canadian Universities, some at the National Research
Council Canada.
Permanent positions come with many tasks attached (research, teaching or
instrumentation, public relations and administration).

- Temporary (2-year) positions in astronomy are more numerous,
after getting a PhD. It is typical to move from one post to the
next one, even four times. Most of this time is spent on research.
- Outside astronomy, some astronomical skills are valuable in
computing, remote-sensing, industry, education and planetarium. Typically 50% of astronomy graduates
find good jobs outside Astronomy.
